Think classroom learning is just about sitting quietly, listening to lectures, and scribbling notes? Well, that’s so outdated! Even with the latest tech gadgets, sticking to the old-school, one-way teaching methods can easily become a snooze fest. Studies have shown that a dull and repetitive classroom environment can lead to boredom and confusion, rather than helping students get a better grasp of the material.

So, what's the solution? Petra Business School has come up with a fresh and exciting approach called Fun Learning. As the name suggests, this program is all about shaking things up and moving learning outside the boring confines of the classroom. Fun Learning encourages students to dive into real-world experiences, making their education much more engaging and hands-on.

The first-ever Fun Learning event took place on August 13, 2024, and it involved the students from the Global Entrepreneurship & Innovation (GEIn) program. This event was hosted at Pakuwon Mall in Surabaya, and it was a game-changer for how students experience learning. Before the trip, students were asked to pick a brand they found interesting. Their task was to get up close and personal with this brand, analyzing everything from market share to consumer needs and other key details.

The students were split into three groups, each choosing a different brand to focus on: “The Headline,” “Oh! Some,” and “Nudie Jeans.” They then did a deep dive into their chosen brands, looking at various aspects. This wasn’t just about seeing how a brand operates, but also about honing skills like market analysis, critical thinking, and problem-solving—skills that are super important in the business world.

What was really cool about this Fun Learning session was the palpable excitement among the students. Instead of the usual stressed-out look we often see in traditional classes, the students were visibly enthusiastic and engaged. They were out and about, exploring the mall, discussing their observations, and working together as a team. It’s clear that mixing up the learning environment and making it more interactive can make a huge difference in how students feel about their education.

One of the biggest perks of Fun Learning is that it gives students a taste of the real world. By visiting actual companies or brands, students get to see firsthand how business theories play out in real life. It’s one thing to learn about market strategies from a textbook and another to see them in action. This kind of experience helps students think about their own career paths and business ideas, sharpening their analytical skills and preparing them for real-world challenges.

Moreover, Fun Learning isn’t just about learning more effectively; it’s also about building better relationships. Working in groups on these projects helps students bond with each other and with their professors. They learn how to collaborate, share ideas, and tackle problems creatively, which are all valuable skills for their future careers.

PBS is all in on continuing the Fun Learning program to keep making education more exciting and relevant. The goal is to keep students from getting bored with their studies and to provide them with real-life experiences through various projects and visits. Fun Learning isn’t just an alternative to traditional classroom learning; it’s an exciting innovation that transforms how we approach education.

So, if you’re still stuck thinking that higher education is all about sitting in class and listening to lectures, it’s definitely time for a change. With programs like Fun Learning, education becomes more dynamic, practical, and—let’s be honest—way more fun.
