From February 19-22, 2025, a group of enthusiastic Petra Business School (PBS) students embarked on an eye-opening journey to Singapore for the Doing Business in Singapore program. This exclusive experience, designed as part of their second-semester curriculum, provided an unparalleled opportunity to explore the dynamic business landscape of one of Asia’s most thriving economies. Unlike a typical study trip, this program was fully covered by PBS, including airfare and accommodations, ensuring that every student could immerse themselves completely in this invaluable experience.

Over the course of four days, the students, accompanied by a dedicated faculty mentor, had the privilege of visiting some of Singapore’s most prominent businesses and institutions. Their itinerary included stops at Becton Dickinson, The Institute of Singapore Chartered Accountants (ISCA), Irvin’s The Salted Egg, Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS), and Singapore Institute of Management (SIM). These visits offered students first-hand exposure to different industries, ranging from healthcare and finance to food production and higher education. Each session was filled with insightful discussions, company presentations, and networking opportunities that broadened their understanding of global business operations.

However, this trip was not just about observation—it was a true learning experience. The students were assigned the task of analyzing each company they visited, applying the business concepts they had studied in class to real-world operations. This analytical exercise was designed to bridge the gap between theory and practice, encouraging students to think critically and strategically about business structures, marketing strategies, and operational efficiencies. Upon returning to Indonesia, they would present their findings and engage in thought-provoking discussions with their peers and professors, ensuring that the knowledge gained in Singapore continued to shape their academic journey.

Beyond the professional visits, the program also allowed students to experience the vibrant culture of Singapore. In their free time, they explored the city’s iconic landmarks, savored its world-renowned cuisine, and navigated its efficient public transportation system. This balance between structured business activities and leisure time enriched their understanding of Singapore’s unique blend of innovation and tradition. Walking through Marina Bay, visiting bustling hawker centers, or simply absorbing the fast-paced rhythm of the city, they gained insights that extended far beyond textbooks.

The impact of this program was profound. Students returned with a renewed enthusiasm for their studies, inspired by the entrepreneurial spirit and business excellence they witnessed in Singapore. Many expressed how the experience reshaped their perspectives on global business, making them more eager to pursue international careers or even start their own ventures. It also reinforced the idea that education is not confined within the walls of a classroom—true learning happens through experience, exploration, and engagement with the real world.

The success of this first Doing Business in Singapore trip sets the stage for future batches of PBS students to enjoy the same privilege. With the program receiving overwhelmingly positive feedback, it is clear that this initiative is not just an academic requirement, but a transformative milestone in every PBS student’s journey. As PBS continues to prioritize real-world exposure alongside academic rigor, this program serves as a testament to the institution’s commitment to preparing students for the dynamic and competitive world of international business.

For those eager to experience this unparalleled opportunity in the future, PBS ensures that such experiences will remain a core part of its curriculum. Want to be part of the next batch?
